GENERAL INFORMATION

Biotechnology is defined as the use of plants, animals and microorganisms to produce a product that is beneficial to humans and the environment, to solve a problem, and to serve R&D by utilising basic sciences and natural sciences such as cell and tissue culture, molecular biology, microbiology, physiology and biochemistry, as well as enzyme technology, DNA technology, genetic engineering and computer engineering.

Biotechnology, an interdisciplinary science, is the use of biological systems in the production of goods and services based on science and engineering principles without harming the environment and human health.

In the global process, Biotechnology R&D serves the sector in many fields such as agriculture, food, animal husbandry, renewable energy production, industrial enzyme production, health, medicine and pharmacy with the main classification of Agro-Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology and Medical Biotechnology. In this way, Biotechnology science offers solutions to questions regarding the sustainability of ecosystems and makes great contributions to productivity increase with its use in different industries. In recent years, the Biotechnology sector has been making great progress and investments in R&D in this field are increasing rapidly.

Our country, which is an important part of a geography where humanity started agricultural production for the first time in the world, is the homeland of many important agricultural products. Biotechnology, a branch of science in which the knowledge of human beings in biological sciences is blended with developing technology, is used in many fields of agriculture in developed countries.

In our Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, theoretical and laboratory applied courses will be given to undergraduate and graduate students in Plant Biotechnology, Enzyme-Microbial Biotechnology and Animal Biotechnology disciplines.

In our department, researches will be carried out using molecular, microbial, tissue culture and recombinant DNA technology techniques. In this context, it is among the goals of our department to develop biotechnological methods and products that can be applied from laboratory scale to pilot scale and from pilot scale to industrial scale, to ensure that Iğdır University has a say in the field of Agricultural Biotechnology and Agricultural R&D in the national and international arena on a national and regional basis, and to provide national and international trainings in this field.

Our department was established in 2018 within the Faculty of Agriculture and continues to serve with 1 Professor, 3 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors and 1 Research Assistant to implement R&D Projects that will lead regional development.
